Is a Vampire FaceLift right for you?

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Vampires are red-hot right now, and we're not just talking about star-crossed, blood-sucking young lovers in books and television shows. Across the country, women are undergoing a Vampire FaceLift.

If you're spooked by needles or the sight of blood, this is not the beauty treatment for you. But, it's also not as painful as it might sound. The Vampire FaceLift uses a part of your blood to try erase a few years off your face.

Is the blood vampires crave really the secret to looking younger? Reality TV star Kim Kardashian apparently thinks so, and she tweeted a picture of her face covered in blood.

So, in Georgia, Laurie Mayfield figured, why not?

"I am going to get the Vampire FaceLift," said Mayfield.

Mayfield recently lost weight, and felt like her face looked a little too thin. Dr. Louis Cole used Mayfield's own blood to plump up her skin.

Cole drew blood from Laurie's arm, and then gave it a spin in a centrifuge. Once Mayfield's face was numb, Dr. Cole re-injected her platelet rich plasma, along with the filler Restalyne, to give her a fuller, softer look.

"Used to be before, everybody thought youthfulness was a tight pull-back.  But now we're realizing that youthful women have volume to their cheeks, and definition and angles to their face," said Cole.

Did the blood do the trick?

"A week ago, when I had it done, I could tell a difference then.  But then the next morning I woke up and I'm like, "Oh, my gosh, that laugh line is almost gone!  And it's just been, every day, it's like, better," said Mayfield.

Cole says Mayfield could continue to see improvement over the next couple of months, and the result could last year even two. But on the website Realage.com, a forum where doctors and patients weigh-in on cosmetic procedures, not everybody is a "vampire" fan. Some doctors say these platelet-rich plasma injects aren't proven to last any longer, or work any better, than injecting filler alone.
