Home construction up in metro area

Posted: Updated:
NEWNAN, Ga. -

As the spring temperatures start heat up, so is the metro area's housing market. According to home builder McGraw-Hill Construction, work on residential homes and apartments is up 48 percent over this time last year.

Developers are building houses again.  The numbers are not nearly what they were before the Great Recession, but they are encouraging.

In Newnan, the city issued building permits for 45 new homes so far this year.  That's ahead of last year at this time.

It's the same for Coweta County, which issued 192 new home permits in 2012.  They've issued 30 in just the last month for a total of 60 this year.

Other important numbers are ticking up also.

"Our sales tax revenues have come back up.  That means people are spending money.  They feel more confident," said Patricia Palmer, Newnan's director of community service and human resources.

Newnan has the need for new housing because jobs have increased.

A Piedmont Hospital has opened this year, as well as a very large facility belonging to Cancer Centers of America.

In Madison Park, pine trees grew on lots cleared for the new construction after the original developed went under.

Hughston Homes is now developing it and turning it around.

"We are excited about seeing the growth.  As we stated earlier, we have seen some growth that was stagnant over the years, but to see some of these neighborhoods continue to build out is a great opportunity," said Michael Foust, assistant administrator of Coweta County.

Residents moving into Madison Park are said to be employed by Piedmont Hospital, the Cancer Center or the nearby Kia automotive plant.
