NY charter school official admits embezzling $203K

Posted: Updated:

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The former chief financial officer of a foundation that funds charter schools in Albany has admitted embezzling almost $203,000 from the organization.

Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares says 49-year-old Ronald Racela pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree grand larceny for stealing the money while working for the Brighter Choice Foundation from September 2011 until December.

He's expected to be sentenced May 17 to from five to 10 years in state prison and ordered to pay back the money.

Brighter Choice officials said they weren't aware Racela was on probation for stealing almost $54,000 from KeyBank, where he was a manager, when he was hired in June 2010.

Realty TV star Kim Kardashian probably wished she did have one before she walked down the aisle with Kris Humphries. We might never have known about Tiger Woods' cheating ways if he had one. And figure skater Johnny Weir is insisting on one as part of his post-nuptial agreement. What is it? A digital privacy clause. New York City divorce lawyer Bettina Hindin says once you push "send" someone can find it.

Another week and another credit card hacking at a major retailer. This time it was Michael's craft store. Consumers are uneasy because current credit card technology is antiquated. "The fact is you cannot protect your credit cards, you can't every time you give it out it is vulnerable to fraud," says Robert Siciliano, McAfee identity theft expert.
