A spring festival with Indian style

Posted: Updated:

Houston's Indian community is celebrating Holi this week. It's also known as the Festival of Colors.

It's a Hindu holiday with deep religious significance, but it also is recognized as a joyous celebration heralding the beginning of spring.

On Sunday, thousands gathered at a park in Rosenberg to celebrate Holi with singing, dancing, great food, and the tradition of covering each other with brightly colored powders.

Houston blogger Ruchi Mukherjee visited the festival and talked to its organizer, Sunil Thakkar.

"Holi is the most vibrant of the Hindu celebrations," Thakkar said. "It has color, water, music, dance, and romance!"

As people walked through the park, they were greeted all around them with people splashing the vibrant colored powders on each other.

Another tradition is a large bonfire that is set up for people to offer up flowers and fruits, wishing for a good year to follow.
