HOUSTON (FOX 26) -

Over 80 firefighters worked to get the upper hand on a fire at a northwest Houston apartment complex Monday night.

The fire broke out around 8 p.m. at the Woods on Lamonte Apartments in the 4800 block of Lamonte at Watonga.

Firefighters arrived finding heavy smoke and fire coming from the building.

The fire was upgraded to a second alarm at about 8:15 p.m. and a third alarm just before 8:40 p.m. Monday.

Investigators believe the fire started in the attic area of one of the apartment buildings and rapidly spread through a common attic.

One firefighter was transported for dehydration to the hospital and is expected to be released within 24 hours.

The American Red Cross has been requested to assist those residents displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
