A Walton County woman went to extraordinary lengths to protect herself and her dog from a pit bull that attacked her in her front yard.

Tina Anderson said she had only seconds to act after her dog Jasper, a 2-year-old Sheppard/husky mix, was attacked on Tuesday. Anderson said that a stray pit bull with no tags walked into their yard and charged at Jasper.

"He just wouldn't let go and my dog was whining, he was trying to fight back, but you could tell he was in pain," Anderson aid.

Tina says she tried to separate the dogs, but the pit bull attacked her.

"He knocked me down and at that point I was scared, because what if he turned on me? My daughter was in the house. What if something worse happened," Anderson said.

With several deep cuts to her leg and arm, Anderson grabbed a butcher knife from her kitchen and went after the pit bull.

"I second guessed myself. I said, 'I don't want to do it'. But that's the only way I thought I could save my dog," Anderson said.

She stabbed the pit bull about a dozen times until it staggered away, collapsed and died.

Anderson will need surgery on her leg and Jasper has several wounds, but both will be OK.

"The vet basically said, if his hair wasn't as thick around his neck, then he would have died," Anderson said.

Police say Anderson will not be charged in this incident, though they do say the dog's owner -- if that person can be found -- could be liable for her medical bills.
