Harbor seal spotted in Hackensack River

Posted: Updated:

CARLSTADT, N.J. (AP) -- A Harbor seal has been spotted fishing in the Hackensack River.

A New Jersey Meadowlands Commission worker saw the seal lounging on a dock at the River Barge Park in Carlstadt Tuesday.

A photograph was taken and sent to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine.

The Record newspaper reports center director Robert Schoelkopf said the seal appears to be in good shape.

Schoelkopf says the seals are all over New Jersey this time of year looking for food, especially herring and mackerel.
