Panel discusses soda ban lifted

Tuesday was the day the large sugary drink ban was supposed to go into effect, but a state supreme court judge blocked enforcement of the regulation in New York City on Monday.

Good Day NY spoke with attorney Remi Spencer, nutritionist Keri Glassman and the executive director of the NYC Hospitality Alliance Andrew Rigie.

There are grounds for an appeal but I think this decision will be upheld on appeal. The trial judge wrote a scathing opinion. He went through the history of the city's charter laws. He said the health board did not have the authority to create this kind of power. The law itself was arbitrary and capricious to be enforced even on a city block," said Spencer.

"It's a step in the right direction. Alcohol, tobacco and sugar are three main contributors to non-communicable diseases. Alcohol and tobacco are regulated," said Glassman.

"Restaurateurs invest in their neighborhood. We need to work together. You see restaurants have moved to healthier items on their menus. Let's work cooperatively," said Rigie.
