One of the biggest attractions at the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the food. Fried, sugared, roasted, you name it, they got it.
Every year, the food vendors compete in the Gold Buckle Foodie Awards competition for first place prizes in everything from Best Dessert to
Best Food On A Stick.
Food writer Amber Ambrose put her stomach on the line to try as many of the winners as she could.
Among the winners that Ambrose consumed was the "Best Fried Food", which this year is the Original Coney Dog from Fletchers Corny Dogs & Funnel Cakes.
"I love corn dogs," Ambrose said. "And this one is fantastic". The secret to the Fletchers Dog, she was told, is a batter that is mixed to get as much air out as possible, and icy cold hot dogs that are dipped into the batter before they are dunked into the fryer.
One of the more unusual winners was the "Best Dessert", only because it wouldn't seem to be a big dessert item. The winner was Go Nuts and More's Cinnamon Glazed Pecans. "They taste like French toast, without the actual French toast," Ambrose said.
Rumor has it that Ambrose had to be wheeled out of the rodeo after attempting to taste all of the winners.
