Brown Hand Center founder sentenced to jail

Posted: Updated:

A former hand surgeon and founder of the Brown Hand Center will spend up to 180 days in jail after he was found guilty of contempt of court during a court appearance related to a child support violation case filed against him.

The jail sentence for Michael Brown, 55, is the latest in a series of legal troubles for the former surgeon who was well-known for appearing in television commercials promoting the Brown Hand Center clinics.

Brown was arrested on a charge of interfering with a flight crew on Jan. 2. That and other charges were filed against him in Florida were related to a British Airways flight that landed in Miami in January.

Brown was also charged with assault of a family member based on an August 2010 incident involving his then-estranged fourth wife Rachel, but he was found not guilty in September 2011 following a very public trial.

In 2002, Brown pleaded 'no contest' to assaulting his third wife, who was pregnant at the time.

Brown lost his medical license when he tested positive for cocaine in 2006. He opened the first Brown Hand Center clinic in 1988. The clinics continue to operate in Houston and five other U.S. cities with other doctors at the helm.
