Red Cross worker stole $274,000

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) — A former financial director for an American Red Cross chapter in New York has been sentenced to 2 1/3 to seven years in prison for embezzlement.

Deborah Leggio was sentenced Wednesday in Suffolk County. Prosecutors said Leggio stole over $274,000 from the county's Red Cross chapter.

The judge rejected Leggio's bid to stay out of jail in order to keep paying restitution.

Leggio lived in Coram, N.Y., before moving to Tracy, Calif.

Authorities said she used a Red Cross debit card to pay for personal items like nail treatments, a Weight Watchers membership and her children's tuition.

She was convicted of grand larceny and offering a false instrument for filing related to tax evasion.

The thefts occurred between 2005 and 2009. An audit uncovered the missing funds.
