NEW YORK (AP) -

A former Brooklyn school janitor convicted of raping an eighth-grade girl has been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.

Ambiorix Rodriguez was sentenced on Wednesday after being convicted in January of rape, sex assault and sexual abuse.

Rodriguez worked as a custodian at the Middle School for Marketing and Legal Studies from September 2010 to January 2011, authorities said. During that time, he repeatedly touched and had sex with the girl when she was 12 and 13 in the school's basement and stairwell, authorities said.

Rodriguez, 34, was arrested in April 2011 after the victim disclosed the abuse to school officials, who notified police.

It once was an accepted tactic as old as policing itself and, according to the NYPD, a key to the city's dramatic drop in crime: patrol officers stopping young men on the street to see if they're up to no good.
