Dives, sonar scans end in search for Ga. boater

Posted: Updated:

CUMMING, Ga. (AP) - Authorities in north Georgia say they're still looking for a missing boater on Lake Lanier, but search efforts using dive teams, side-scanning sonar and helicopters have ended.

A spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Natural Resouces tells FOX 5 news that authorities will keep patrolling the water's surface near Little Ridge Park, where the missing man's boat was found Monday night. But DNR says searches underwater and from the air have been suspended.

Authorities on Friday identified the missing boater as 47-year-old George "Marty" Counts of Tucker, who had a house on Lake Lanier and frequently fished there.

A search team found Counts' shoes, fishing rod and hat during the 5-day hunt for the missing man. But search efforts were often hindered by stormy, windy and cold weather.
