Canceled Galveston cruises could mark trouble for the island economy

GALVESTON, Texas (FOX 26) -

Carnival Cruise Lines has canceled 14 cruises while Triumph undergoes repairs. Small businesses on Galveston Island are bracing for the economic loss that will mean.

"I think the impact will be immediate. They do a lot to help us, the traffic, the people employed by the cruise ships do a lot to help our economy," says Allen Flores who owns not one but two businesses in the Strand district.

The port of Galveston says each Triumph cruise brought in $50,000 in revenue. This looks like the port will suffer a $700,000 loss. Cruise ships provide the port with %35 of it's budget. Triumph alone makes up 45 percent of that. "When we were doing out budget for 2013, it was a tight budget trying to find the revenue to meet our expenses. We're going to have to tighten our belts a bit," says port director Michael Mierzwa.

He says no layoffs at this point.
