Former Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward, head football coach at Westbury Christian School, will honor Texans executive vice president/general manager Rick Smith and former Rockets GM Carroll Dawson on Saturday.
Ward will honor Smith and Dawson during the third annual Charlie Ward Tribute to Excellence.
Proceeds from the event will be used to help Westbury Christian build new athletic facilities.
During the event's previous two years Ward honored former Tampa Bay and Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy and former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, who coached Ward with the Seminoles.
"Still trying to get that tryout with the Texans," Ward told FOX 26 Sports laughing. "So I'm going to honor the GM and see if I can get one."
All kidding aside, Ward is honoring both men because of their leadership and their faith.
"The 'Tribute to Excellence' is my way of honoring prestigious men of God who are community oriented and it will help raise funds for our school," Ward said.
"We are in the middle of a capital campaign to help renovate our athletic complex on the southwest side of town."
On Smith's watch the Texans won their first two AFC South division titles the past two seasons.
When Smith joined the Texans in 2006 he inherited a team that had won two games.
Dawson who is still a consultant with the Rockets, retired in 2007 after 27 years with the organization.
He was the Rockets general manager from 1996 to 2007.
Dawson is the only member of the Rockets organization who served as a coach on all four Houston teams that went to the NBA Finals (1981, 1986, 1984, 1985).
"For me to be able to honor all of the guys that I have honored is a tremendous blessing, because at one point in time they have helped people like myself get to where I am today," Ward said.
"My goal at Westbury Christian is to leave a legacy similiar to what these guys are doing. It's always a blessing to recognize the things that they are doing."
Ward's event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Downtown Club at the Met in downtown Houston.

"The big part about this one is it's two general managers, one from football and one from basketball," Ward said. "One gave me an opportunity and I'm still, like I said, working on the other one."
Ward played for the Dawson and the Rockets during the 2004-05 season.
