Atlantans will join activists around the world in a global movement called, One Billion Rising on Thursday. The goal is to demand an end to violence against women and girls.
There are three events taking place in Atlanta -- a gathering at the capitol on Thursday morning, a flash mob at noon and a sculpture on display at Freedom Park.
The sculpture to be unveiled is a 12-foot tall, female figure. It's intended to represent a woman rising in dance, which is the whole idea behind the one billion rising initiative.
The Chelko Foundation came up with the concept and enlisted the help of sculptor Phil Proctor. He says a project like this would usually take 6 weeks, but they've been asked to do it in a little more than one week.
Those involved say it is an enormous challenge. They have gotten very little sleep, but say it will all be worth it when their piece of art is unveiled and they can be a part of the initiative to raise awareness about violence against women.
The sculpture will be installed on Wednesday and unveiled on Thursday, which is the global day of action. It will be on display at Freedom Park until March 30.
