When it comes to Valentine's Day, two words come to mind: flowers and chocolate.
Annie Rupani can't help you with the flowers, but she sure can help you with the chocolate.
Six months ago, Rupani started Cacao & Cardamom. It's a chocolate company featuring beautifully crafted chocolates with some unusual fillings.
Houston food writer Amber Ambrose recently talked to Rupani about Cacao & Cardamom.
"I was studying for my law school admission exam , and told myself I needed to take a year off," Rupani said. "I decided to travel and do some charity work. When I was in Malaysia I took a chocolate making course, and when I got back last April I said ‘Let's do this'".
And thus began Cacao & Cardamom. What makes her chocolates stand out are the fillings. She uses a lot of spices and fruit she grew up with in a South Asian home or found during her travels around the world.
"When I went to China I fell in love with Sichuan pepper corns and when I went to Hawaii guava and tamarind were so prominent there," she told Ambrose. "I just tried to put it in chocolate, and it works!"
For Valentine's Day she is creating heart and lip shaped chocolates filled with ingredients that are said to be aphrodisiacs.
Currently, you can order Rupani's chocolates online and get them at Relish Fine Foods. By the end of the month, they will also be available at Revival Market, Central Market, and Whole Foods.
