Crystal Smith and her children will never forget the morning of Jan. 6. That is the morning they could have died in an apartment fire.
"My daughter was five to seven feet from the flames coming in the door. If my neighbors had not caught it, hadn't banged on the window when they did, my kids could've been killed," says Smith.
It was the third fire in that apartment complex on Perthshire Road in just a few days. Arson investigators believe those fires were part of a larger pattern of 11 fires occurring north of Memorial Drive, south of Interstate 10, east of Eldridge Parkway and west of North Kirkwood Road.
Investigators believe that the arsonist lives in the area and is traveling by foot. So far, nobody has been hurt, but that's just sheer luck. Some of the fires have been set in apartment stairwells and could have trapped residents.
"We don't want the ultimate tragedy to happen," says Katherine Cabaniss with Crime Stoppers of Houston. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 713-222-8477 (TIPS).
