BAYTOWN, Texas -
The families of two teens caught up in a Baytown police chase in October 2012 are suing that city.
"We just want to make sure things change. My son did not have to die." said Shawn Williams Sr. about his son Shawn Jr.
Police were pursuing two shoplifting suspects. The two struck a police car while trying to get away. The police say that is why they had no choice but to follow.
During the pursuit, a police officer threw down some spike strips to stop the alleged thieves. The flee attempt allegedly went out of control after hitting the strips. It slammed into the car carrying Shawn Jr. and Shay Hollingsghead.
Shawn Jr. died. Hollingsghead survived but is injured. The families hope to receive compensation and change the police department policy.
