Price increases not as sharp for 2013 as for 2012

Posted: Updated:

Grocery prices edged up in Houston during 2012, but not nearly as much as the sharp increase in prices in 2011.

Our findings are based on a grocery price survey started in January 2011. To get our data, we record prices from Kroger, HEB, and Walmart, for the same product, in the same quantity, to determine the average price. We have two shopping lists. The small list we call our "Basic 12," this represents items you may by most frequently. A list of 75 items is simply called the "Big List" which includes the "Basic 12" and many more.

According to our price survey, the "Basic 12" increased 19 percent in 2011, and another 3 percent in 2012.

Our "Big List" increased 9 percent in 2011, but showed no increase from January 2012 to January 2013.

We hope you'll download the PDF files here to benefit from all the information from this survey. You can see what products we are following, which increased or decreased, and compare prices between the stores. We also welcome comments, suggestions, and your grocery store observations any time!
