When most people think about beer, they think about pouring it into a tall cold glass for drinking. But at a recent food competition in Houston, it was all about pouring the beer into a pot ... for cooking.
St. Arnold Brewing Company just held its annual One Pot Showdown. It's a cooking competition that brings
together 50 teams all bent on showing they have the best one pot recipe around.
Houston food writer Amber Ambrose attended the event to see what it is all about.
The rules are simple. Everything has to be cooked at the competition, it all has to be cooked in one pot, and it has
to include at least one of Saint Arnold's beers. Teams of judges narrow down the entries to decide who wins.
Brewery spokesperson (and Amber's hubby), Lennie Ambrose, explained why the brewery holds the annual event.
"We want people to think about beer as more than just something you can drink," he said. "You can cook with it and
it can be paired with food."
He said that the brewery sells 500 tickets for people to come taste all of the entries. The event benefits Kids Meals Houston, a non-profit
that delivers meals to children in low-income homes.
All of the cooking teams seem to have a great time. The team that won the very first competition back in 2008, the Carnies, was back again
this year making a corn soup with Saint Arnold Stout.
"This is so much fun," said The Carnies team member Matt Schlabach. "We get together with our friends to cook and drink beer". "But, we do want to win!."
Each year, there are prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The first place winner gets a huge trophy and a $500 cash prize.
Saint Arnold Brewing Company owner Brock Wagner announced this year's winners. First place went to a team called the Pot Knot Cookers.
They won with their meatball chicken stew.
