Former New York City Mayor Edward I. Koch was moved to the intensive care unit at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Thursday, according to his spokesman.
Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum, Koch's cardiologist and lead doctor, said he wanted to monitor the former mayor more closely, according to George Arzt, the spokesman.
Koch has been in and out of the hospital severl times in recent months. He has been suffering from excess fluid causing shortness of breath.
Koch, 88, served three terms as mayor from 1978 to 1989, the year he lost the Democratic primary to David Dinkins.
