Vincent Powell, 29, is trying to make it happen on the "American Idol" stage for the second year in a row. And this time, he's doing it in front of his own "Idol" or childhood crush, Mariah Carey.
Originally from Austin, Powell told me by phone he moved to Houston in 2001 to attend Texas Southern University and never left. He rocked the judges with a little "Rock Me, Baby."
Powell hopes to record a Gospel album, and got high praise from all three of the new judges, including his crush. Mariah Carey told him he sang like an angel.
Powell is headed to Hollywood along with Sanni M. Mairura. The sixteen-year-old is from Pearland. His mother is originally from Tanzania and his father is from Kenya. They met here in the United States while attending college.
Besides singing, Mairura is also a dancer and performs with his church group.
Mairura's version of "Who's Loving You?" by Michael Jackson earned him his own 'Golden Ticket' to Hollywood.
