Houstonians come to the rescue of WWII veteran

Posted: Updated:

Houstonians are lending a helping hand to a World War II veteran whose northwest-side home was defaced by vandals.

Elbert Wood, 93, came home on Monday to find his walls, couch, clock and even his TV covered in spray-painted graffiti. Police nabbed two boys, ages 13 and 16, who admitted they'd done it.

The destruction came right on the heels of an even bigger tragedy in Wood's life: his wife passed away just last month.

But less than 24 hours after the story made the news, volunteers arrived at Wood's house, donating manpower and materials to more than make up for the damage done.

"I am just amazed that people are being so helpful and doing so much for me," said Wood, as Gallery Furniture workers carted in a new couch.

The former Marine and Purple Heart recipient tells FOX 26 News that in all his years he never thought he'd see an outpouring of goodwill quite like this.
