HOUSTON (FOX 26) -
While violent crime is trending down in many parts of the country, that's not a meaningful statistic if you become one of the victims.
Many people, when faced with a dangerous situation, may not know how to react. That's the premise of personal-safety expert, Richard Bloom, who has talked with hundreds of groups about how to protect themselves.
He says it's key to be aware of your surroundings and willing to stand-up to an aggressor.
"Nobody ever thinks it's going to happen to them," says Bloom. "If you don't think it's going to happen and you let your guard down, you become very vulnerable. Being aware; being proactive, is what's going to save their life."
While the nation continues to debate the use of guns for personal protection, Bloom says he prefers chemical sprays because they are non-lethal and easier to use.
