Union tells subway operators to slow train speeds

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) -- The transit union is urging its subway operators to slow trains as they enter stations following two recent incidents where New York City riders were pushed in front of oncoming trains.

The Transport Workers Union Local 100 distributed fliers last week in which it urged operators to "enter every station as if there is a pair of yellow lanterns at the entrance."

But the MTA has taken issue with the directive. It said any effort to comply with a speed change "may be considered a job action." It told the union to "cease posting these unauthorized notices."

It said reduced speeds would effect on-time performance and result in fewer train trips.

The agency said there was no indication that the two high-profile track deaths were caused by excess speed.
