Lawmaker: Break-in tied to newspaper gun map

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A New York State Senator says that an attempted gun burglary has been tied to the Journal News' map that lists names and addresses of residents with gun permits.

The break-in occurred Saturday night and the target of the break-in was allegedly the homeowner's gun safe.  The thieves apparently weren't able to break into the safe and gave up.

Senator Greg Ball (Patterson-R) said a burglary on Davis Ave. in White Plains, New York evidently ties into The Journal News gun maps.

Ball, on his website,  says that it was reported that the burglar used the paper's interactive gun map to target a home included on the map.  The paper posted an interactive map of gun permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties.  Putnam county officials have attempted to block the paper from its data.

"The Journal News has placed the lives of these folks at risk by creating a virtual shopping list for criminals and nut jobs," Ball said.

Senator Ball is introducing a bill Monday to keep permit data private.

"Publishing this information on a website, as we have evidently just witnessed in the recent attempted gun burglary, provides criminals with a map of where they can steal firearms from lawful owners for later use in the commission of crimes," Ball said.
