NEW YORK (AP) -
Gun powder and a cannon ball were found inside a 18th Century cannon that had been on display at the Central Park Conservancy, New York City police said.
The discovery was made Friday during routine cleaning of the cannons, the NYPD said. Residual gun powder was spotted after a piece of rust was removed in the morning from the cannon, exposing the cannon ball, cops said.
Authorities were summoned shortly before noon to remove the gun powder and make it safe. The cannon came from a British Royal Navy Ship, the HMS, circa 1763 to 1780.
A spokeswoman for the Central Park conservancy said she had no comment.
Packing material, gun powder and a cannon ball are occasionally found inside cemented cannons when they are X-rayed during routine cleaning.
