HOUSTON (FOX 26) -
AT&T is stepping up efforts to crack down on texting and driving.
It is installing its "Drive Mode" app in Android and Blackberry phones.
"People are using the technology in ways that are literally dangerous," said CEO and Chairman Randall Stephenson.
The app is free and available for download if you already have one of those phones.
It turns itself off when it senses the phone is doing more than 20 mph. It bounces back the message that you are driving. You can retrieve your messages when you shut off the app.
There are over a dozen similar apps that do this, but the ones from Sprint and T-Mobil are either paid upgrades of have fees.
