Edina police promote hazing as coyote mating season starts

Posted: Updated:

Did you know coyote mating season starts in December? The Edina Police Department does, and they are warning residents to prepare for an increase of activity in the coming months.

Police say the season will change in how the animals behave, and they, along with Animal Control, are urging residents to aggressively haze coyotes and keep an eye on their pets when outdoors.

According to Animal Control officials, coyotes may even target large dogs during the mating season, and could do significant harm to a family pet through pack hunting.

With no natural enemies in an urban setting, coyotes are free to come and go as the please.

"The thing about coyotes is we kind of have to learn to live with them," said Jason Abraham, with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

According to Abraham, even fenced-in yards might not be enough to keep a pet safe when coyotes are more active.

"It might see [the pet] as a predator, it might see it as competition for food," he explained.

Abraham says that's why homeowners need to be as territorial as the coyotes are to keep the critters from becoming either a nuisance or a risk.

Any resident who sees a coyote on their property is urged to shoo away the coyotes using the following tactics:

  • Make as much noise as possible
  • Throw small objects, such as rocks and sticks
  • As a last resort, chase the coyote away

Residents are also encouraged to keep garbage cans closed securely to avoid attracting coyotes or other wildlife, such as raccoons or possums.

Typically, the coyote mating season runs through March.
