A novel effort by a group of Houston bar and restaurant owners to help the community around them is now open for business.
In a 19th century building in Downtown Houston, the Original OKRA Charity Saloon promises not to make a dime of profit.
The 'Organized Kollaboration on Restaurant Affairs', of OKRA, is a sort of 'eatery lobby' in the city. Members wanted a new venture that would allow them to funnel proceeds back into the community that has helped them thrive.
That's what the saloon does...
With the purchase of a drink, patrons get to vote for one of four charities, each month. The organization with the most votes, get the saloon's profits for that month.
Charities that would like to participate will be considered by OKRA's membership to be included in an upcoming vote.
