Houston has the most burglaries of any city in America, a new FBI report shows.
In 2001, we had 27,459. Chicago was next, followed by Dallas and Phoenix. New York City was fifth with 18,159.
Those are raw numbers not adjusted for populations. Houston Police say the raw data does not show the trend either. HPD Spokesman Kise Smith showed us these statistics:
-- 2009: there were 29,279
-- 2010: there were 27,924
-- 2011: there were 27,451
On its website, the FBI warns against making such comparisons.
"Each year when Crime in the United States is published, many entities-news media, tourism agencies, and other groups with an interest in crime in our nation-use reported figures to compile rankings of cities and counties. These rankings, however, are merely a quick choice made by the data user; they provide no insight into the many variables that mold the crime in a particular town, city, county, state, region, or other jurisdiction. Consequently, these rankings lead to simplistic and/or incomplete analyses that often create misleading perceptions adversely affecting cities and counties, along with their residents."
