You often hear about the first babies born into a new year, but FOX 26 News also has a unique look at the family who welcomed one of the last babies of 2012 in Houston. It was fun to talk to the parents about their exciting arrival, but also to discuss some of the perks that come with a baby at the end of the year, rather than the start of the year.
FOX 26 caught up with the Page family at Texas Children's Pavilion for Women. Nicole and Kevin Page couldn't be happier with their new bouncing, baby boy Declan.
"We really wanted a healthy baby, but I wanted a 2012 baby. His siblings were born several weeks early, so I was sure he was going to be here for Christmas, and I was so disappointed, because he had other plans, and we thought - he's not coming 'til January," says Nicole. That didn't end up being the case.
Nicole's son ended up making it into this world only hours before the new year. Nicole and Kevin say they think it's special that the world will be celebrating on every one of their son's birthdays.
"You always here of the New Year's babies and all the accolades they get, but it's kinda fun to have a New Year's Eve baby too. It's a celebration time and a fun day," says proud father Kevin.
"I think it will be fun because everyone will be in the mood to celebrate! It's funny, because his grandmother's birthday is New Year's Day, so one will ring out the year and the other will ring in the new year," says a smiling Nicole.
Declan also has an older brother and sister to help him celebrate. Their parents laugh about the first few minutes they got to meet their new brother.
"Declan was crying and my son, who's almost 4, covered his ears and said, 'What do we do?' It was an emergency! It's the question from parents around the world and we don't know the answer, ha ha, but they are excited," exclaims Declan's parents.
An added bonus for Declan's timing involves finances in the form of a big tax break for an end-of-the year baby.
"A tax break is a nice bonus and we got him just in time for this year's deductible for insurance, yeah it's great, nice surprise," they tell FOX 26. For most couples, it adds up to be about $2,500. More than anything, the Kevin and Nicole Page say they're just relieved their baby is healthy, and they can't wait to get him home to enjoy the new dynamics of their family of five.
