JCP&L seeks to improve outage info

Posted: Updated:

MORRISTOWN, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey's second-largest utility has announced a series of plans designed to keep officials informed about power outage restoration.

Jersey Central Power & Light has drawn criticism from municipal leaders and customers about poor communication throughout Superstorm Sandy. The criticism echoed complaints against JCP&L during Tropical Storm Irene.

JCP&L says staff will be placed in field offices to maintain contact with municipal officials and teleconference briefings will be held.

JCP&L also is developing an app to make it easier for customers to report outages.

State regulators said JCP&L was hit hardest with 90% of its customers losing service because of Sandy. Crews restored service to 1.3 million JCP&L customers within 13 days after Sandy.

Prosecutors in Arizona say they will not file charges in the death of a firearms instructor who was showing a vacationing 9-year-old New Jersey girl how to fire a fully automatic Uzi machine gun. The gun recoiled and Charles Vacca was shot in the head. Shooting ranges with high-powered weapons have become popular attractions in Hawaii and Las Vegas. They draw bachelor parties, newlyweds and tourists from countries that bar citizens from many types of guns.

Some beaches were open to the public but closed to swimmers. The National Weather Service issued a High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Statement for the area beaches because of the effects of Hurricane Cristobal, which is expected to track south and east of the Jersey shore through Thursday.
