The community is stepping in to help after dozens of dog crates and bedding were stolen from a local animal rescue group over the Christmas holiday.
Each weekend, around 25 to 30 dogs rescued from area kill shelters are brought to the Petsmart in Dunwoody by Park Pets Haven in hopes of being adopted. On a normal weekend, around 7 dogs are adopted.
This past Saturday, the event had to be canceled after someone stole around 40 of the crates used to hold the dogs.
"These were absolute thieves.I think they had spotted the materials and they were intent on taking them, they clearly made an effort to get them out," said Rita Maccallom of Park Pet Haven.
The theft is a major setback for the small, all-volunteer organization.
"I mean they hurt us and they hurt the animals," said Brian Lauthen of the group.
But they have already received donations and they intend to be back this Saturday.
"People from literally all over the country have responded. It's been wonderful," said Maccallom.
Park Pets Haven says they may not have enough crates to have has many pets as normal out this week, but said they will be there.
