NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -
Hundreds of family and friends gathered in Queens Saturday to say goodbye to the surfer who saved several lives during Superstorm Sandy.
23-year-old Dylan Smith drowned on December 23 in a surfing accident in Puerto Rico. His funeral was held in Belle Harbor.
Smith used his surfboard to help rescue six people in his Belle Harbor neighborhood during the storm. His heroic efforts earned his national recognition as he was named on People Magazine's "2012 Heroes of the Year" list.
Smith's friends say he went on the trip to Puerto Rico to relax after he tirelessly worked to help clean up his damaged Sandy neighborhood.
