
A deal has been reached to avoid a strike by more than 14,000 longshoremen at major ports from Houston to Boston.
A federal mediator says an expired contract for workers in the International Association of Longshoremen will be extended for another 30 days.
The longshoremen had been preparing for a possible strike Sunday.
Some say the move would have crippled operations at ports that handle about 40 percent of all US container cargo.
