HOUSTON (FOX 26) -

In the years since severe autism struck her son Patrick life has very often seemed hellish for Hilda Bowen - a sacrificial existence driven by devotion, but filled with frustration, exhaustion, worry and despair.

"He would scream for 18 hours at a time," recalled Hilda.

Her bond with FOX 26 was formed five years ago and through her "pbmom" blogs and webposts, she taught MyFoxHouston readers what it means to be a "warrior mom".

Borderline bankruptcy, battles with schools that failed to teach and the anguish of contending with seizures and meltdowns so severe Patrick once punched himself and fractured his own nose.

Through it all, a critical lesson emerged.

"You can't move forward and help your child unless you let go of anger and resentment. You can't change what has happened. You can only move forward," said Hilda.

Instead of feeling powerless, Hilda instead leaned on a higher power.

"God intervenes in our life everyday," she insists.

And for the Bowen family there's been no blessing bigger than a special school in Humble called InKids, a therapeutic center where the challenges of autism are attacked with a highly effective teaching technique known as applied behavior analysis.

For Patrick, the progress made has been life altering.

"It's like opening up a package every day and seeing what else is new inside of  Patrick. Patrick is the present and we get to open a new gift everyday." said Hilda.

So in this season of celebration and thanksgiving, you will find both in the home of Hilda Bowen.  Hope and love in equal measure.

"It's Christmas every day," said Hilda with a smile.

Hilda says her joy would be even greater if benefactors would offer some holiday season generosity to InKids, a non-profit always in need of support.
