The Houston Independent School Distract says the all clear has been given after test on a white powdery substance was received by mail at the school.
The envelope, containing the substance was received today at Franklin Elementary
Initial tests show the substance is not dangerous and nobody was injured.
Because the substances was sent via mail the FBI is usually notified. The principal at the school sent the following letter home to parents as well as sending an alert out via their phone system.
December 21, 2012
Dear Franklin Elementary Community:
I am writing to inform you of an incident that occurred on our campus today, Friday, December 21, 2012. A letter containing a white powdery substance arrived on campus through the U.S. mail. Testing on the envelope and the powdery substance revealed that the substance DID NOT pose a threat to our students or staff. No students are believed to have come into contact with the substance.
When the letter was opened, campus staff immediately notified law enforcement and a Houston Fire Department hazardous materials crew was dispatched to our school. The main office was temporarily quarantined and the air conditioning system was turned off. Instruction returned to normal after officials removed the letter from campus.
The Houston Independent School District considers student and employee safety to be our top priority. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jilliane Raphiel, Principal
Franklin Elementary School
