HOUSTON (FOX 26) -
Most NFL rookies are accustomed to initiation and ridicule, but several Houston Texans first year players will be viewed as heroes by 30 children from the Houston area.
Linebacker Whitney Mercilus, center Ben Jones, wide receiver Keshawn Martin and other rookie players on the Houston Texans roster treated the children the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Houston and the Houston Texans YMCA to a shopping spree at Academy Sports + Outdoors on Tuesday morning.
Fresh from a win on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, the players spent time with the boys and girls, who were each given a $100 gift card to spend at the Academy Sports + Outdoors on the Southwest Freeway frontage road near Kirby Drive.
"I had role models growing up and I wish I had something like this, you know, growing up and things like that, and I'm glad I could do this, you know, for the kids," said Mercilus on FOX 26 Morning News.
