Connecticut shooting took Rocori victim’s mom ‘instantly right back’

Posted: Updated:

Kim Bartell said when she heard Friday morning's news of the elementary school shooting in Connecticut, it took her "instantly right back" to the day she lost her son.

Seth Bartell was one of two students killed at Rocori High School in Cold Spring, Minn. in September 2003.

Friday, Bartell told FOX 9 the Connecticut shooting brought back the feelings of "helplessness, loss, unknown."

"I just…I think of chaos. People's lives changing forever, the parents that now have to identify their children. I had to identify Seth by his shoes."

"You send your children to school because you think they'll be safe there. You know you feel in your heart you're doing the right thing. And then that happens and you realize that stepping out of your house in the morning, you're totally not safe. Ever. And your children are never safe ever again, either. I mean you lose that safety net."

"I have to send my children to that school again. Will I see them this evening when they come home? That's your reality now. Being inducted to a club you don't ever want to be in. One that only a few people know of and, when other people try to relate, they can't."

"Every year since the shooting, I used to love the holidays. Thanksgiving and New Years were the best time of the year. For the last nine years I've basically checked out and thankful that they're over."

"This actually is the first year that I've wanted to be here and wanted to be a part of Christmas. And those families, who knows if they'll ever get that back."
