‘Tis the season for family togetherness. And that can be too much of a good thing.
But family dysfunction is fodder for laughs in a locally-produced play opening Thursday.
It's called "Your Family Sucks." And the plot thickens when the younger daughter develops a hopeless crush on a teen pop singer.
"She finds out that he is a big fan of this game show," explained playwright Abby Koenig. "And the game show just happens to be coming to a town near you. And so she signs her family up."
There's just one problem. To win the game show, family members really need to know each other's likes and dislikes.
And in this family, they can barely speak to each other without shouting.
Appropriately enough for a play about familial deceit, Koenig admits when she first pitched the script to Horse Head Theatre, there actually was no script.
"They said, ‘all right, we'll see it.' And I sat down and wrote the first 30 pages and we read it. And they said, ‘where's the rest of it?' And I said, ‘oh, yeah, it's at home.' And then I sat down and wrote it."
