Generally, Bob Costas is not a controversial figure, but his comments on gun control during "Sunday Night Football" have kicked up a lot of dust.
Costas said handguns do not make us safer. Borrowing heavily from FOX Sports columnist Jason Whitlock, he then said:
"In the coming days, Jovan Belcher's actions and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe. If Jovan Belcher didn't possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today."
Twitter users attacked him, if not for the content of his comments, then the timing and venue. Sports fans at Bubba's Sports Bar and Grill echoed their sentiments.
"He has the right to say it, but not during a football game," Mark Wallace said. "If he wants to host a political show, then he needs to get his own show."
John Boyart, CEO of the Athena Gun Club in West Houston, said Costas's aim was off.
"For us, to blame an object or a tool for such a tragedy instead of focusing on what caused the issue. What caused Mr. Belcher such desperation that he felt he had to take his own life and murder his girlfriend, the mother of his child? What can we do to prevent that instead of focusing on the tool?"
