More web surfing, more problems for Black Friday shoppers

Posted: Updated:

A new Black Friday survey finds more than half of consumers search the web, for deals, before heading to the stores.

By some estimates, Internet traffic increases 400 percent as the holiday shopping season begins.  Unfortunately, crooks are counting on that as consumer advocates see an uptick in complaints about bogus offers and websites.

To help protect against scams, FOX 26 tech expert Juan Guevara-Torres suggests avoiding general Internet searches and surfing to specific, known sites instead.

"If you want to look for deals, go to a platform that offers deals. Amazon, for example," Guevara-Torres said.  "Or, go to your store. If you like a store, go to that and look for the deal they may have for Cyber Monday."

He also advises consumers make sure they are using websites that offer secure connections to help protect against fraud.
