Word that Hostess Brands will no longer make any of its iconic treats has caused a run on the products in grocery stores. From Twinkies to Ding-Dongs to Zingers, shoppers spent the day grabbing them off store shelves.
Hostess announced it was shutting down operations Friday morning after it said a labor dispute would prevent a successful bankruptcy reorganization.
For shoppers, it meant an unexpected trip down memory lane.
"Twinkies and Cup Cakes and Ding Dongs. When we came home from school that's what everybody wanted to eat," said Chris Pancheri, as he loaded a shopping cart with snack cakes. "When we got home from school, that's what everybody wanted to eat. Just kinda' grew up on 'em and it just felt like an American company; American food that's been with me since birth."
A bankruptcy judge must first approve the closure. The CEO of Hostess says he is looking for buyers of the company's 30 different brands.
