Thirty-two local students stranded in New York are safe and sound after superstorm Sandy. The mock trial teams from Jonesboro High School and the Atlanta International School admit they were a little stir crazy but ran into no major problems.
The Jonesboro High team told FOX 5 that they ventured out on the streets of Brooklyn Tuesday. The Clayton County students said that they developed a bad case of cabin fever after being holed up in the hotel for 24 hours. They described riding out the monster storm.
"The wind shafts going between the buildings were rattling. The windows, they were rattling the windows a lot. The windows were vibrating and that was scary at times. At one time, the window did fly open, so that was pretty scary," said Mylon Craig.
"It was pretty windy and very rainy. It was coming down pretty hard, but we all stayed safe and thanks to our wonderful coaches, we all stayed pretty safe and we were really prepared," said Tre Brown.
With the threatening winds and pouring rain, leaving the hotel was not an option. So, the students had to rely on their non-perishable goods for dinner.
"Peanut butter and honey sandwiches was our dinner last night," Brown said.
The Atlanta International School's mock trial team is also still stranded. Both schools are hoping cleanup will be brisk so that a Wednesday afternoon departure will become a reality.
"Hopefully our flight goes out because we really want to get home, we really miss our parents," said Erin Toole.
Unfortunately, a Jonesboro chaperone said that LaGuardia airport is closed and the earliest flight out would be Saturday. So Clayton County is sending a charter bus up to New York on Tuesday night. It will bring those travel weary students back home sometime in the early morning hours on Thursday
