Lightning strike sparks fire at Maple Grove home; Anoka floods

Posted: Updated:

A Maple Grove home was destroyed by fire Tuesday morning after it was struck by lightning as thunderstorms moved through the area.

The occupants of the home escaped without injury and were able to call 911.

"Sometimes with lightning fires, there is a delay in reporting the fire. People aren't aware their house was struck," said Maple Grove Fire Chief Scott Anderson. "They certainly heard it, but weren't aware it was their house. This time, they could smell the smoke right away, and called right away."

The call came in shortly after 6 a.m. and the fire was contained to the roof and the second floor of the home.

The fire marks the third in the neighborhood, which is mostly new-construction. Anderson explained that with no trees towering over the homes, the roofs are taking more hits. He plans to research whether installing lightning rods could help.

In nearby Anoka, the thunderstorms led to flash flooding as leaves clogged drains and left some commuters swimming to safety while homeowners worked to stop the waters from invading their homes.
