St. Thomas High School coach arrested for child porn

Posted: Updated:
HOUSTON (FOX 26) -

A local high school coach was found with hundreds of sexually-explicit pictures of children, Houston Police say.

"We found 1,600 images and 550 videos of child pornography.  The vast majority of that was males, pre-pubescent," HPD Officer J.T. Roscoe said.

Roscoe said the disturbing images were discovered inside Gordon Ohemig's southwest Houston home in the Lynn Park area.  The 29-year-old was, until recently, the head wrestling coach at St. Thomas High School.  Prior to that, he was the assistant wrestling coach at Episcopal High and volunteered to teach kids wrestling at the Paradigm Training Center on South Rice.

"This pornography will be sent to the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children when it's all extracted.  We always work with them to try to identify victims," Roscoe said.

Investigators fear Oehmig may have victimized some of the students he worked with.

"We ask that parents who have been associated with any of the organizations that he (Oehmig) has, to have a talk with their children," Roscoe said.

Investigators say pedophiles, who are willing to look at child pornographic images, usually don't stop at simple seeing photos.

"Sex offenders will go out and make themselves available to children, putting themselves in places (where kids are).  That's why you have them as wrestling coaches, Boy Scout leaders, church leaders.  They go where they can find the children.  Some of the studies that have come out show that if you have a child pornography collector, you have a contact offender," Roscoe said.

Roscoe said two of the children in the pornographic pictures were just toddlers.

The investigation began when officers tracked child pornographic images to Oehmig's home computer.

The wrestling coach is out of jail on bond.

St. Thomas High School released the following statement:

"It has come to our attention that Coach Gordon Oehmig has been charged with a crime. However, it is our understanding that none of the activities associated with the charge are alleged to have taken place on St. Thomas High School campus, or using any St. Thomas High School property, or involve any St. Thomas High School students. Further, we do not know whether or not any allegations are true. However, Mr. Oehmig has resigned, and no longer works for St. Thomas High School.  Full background checks are conducted on all employees, and employees are also required to gain certification by completing VIRTUS training (www.virtus.org). We want you to know that the care, safety, wellbeing and education of our students are always our top priority.  St. Thomas intends to be fully cooperative with authorities as this investigation moves forward".
