Headstones vandalized at Palmetto cemetery

Posted: Updated:
PALMETTO, Ga. -

Police are searching for clues after a metro area cemetery was vandalized.  More than 35 graves were damaged at the Floral Hill Cemetery in Palmetto sometime between October 13 and 18, according to police.

Vandals toppled headstones that stood for decades -- some for more than a century. Others were broken into pieces.

Concheta Beadles has lived next door to the cemetery for more than 50 years. She says she's never seen anything like this before.

"I just think it's a disgrace because, number one, you can't live in peace alive and don't look like the people dead can be in peace," said Beadles.

Police said that they dusted the grave markers for fingerprints, but so far they don't know who vandalized the graves.

"Probably someone in the neighborhood is going to start talking about it and we just need to get some phone calls about it," said Sgt. Lee Gragg of the Palmetto Police Department.

Arthur McThune says he walks thru the cemetery almost every day and can't imagine if it was his loved one whose resting place was disturbed

"It's just something terrible. Why would somebody do something stupid like this," said McThune.

Police are offering a reward for information leading to an arrest in the vandalism. Authorities also want to hear from family members who have relatives buried at the cemetery.  Anyone with information can call the Palmetto Police Department at 770-463-9068.
