We are learning more about what happened to a popular mural of President Barack Obama that was defaced in Downtown Houston earlier this week.
Splashed with red paint, the mural, which is just around the corner from the Breakfast Klub, was being repainted Wednesday night. The original artist is working with volunteers to get it finished by midnight.
Wednesday night, FOX 26 obtained surveillance video of the people who defaced the mural. The video shows just after midnight Sunday, a silver or bronze pickup truck pulled into the parking lot just around the corner from the mural. Two people got out of the truck and threw mason jars filled with paint on the mural. They hopped back into the truck and took off. This all happened in 60 seconds.
Breakfast Klub owner Marcus Davis had the mural commissioned in 2008. He learned about the vandalism Monday morning. The mural was a fixture on that brick wall since Obama took office. This is the third time the mural has been defaced. Davis believes this is no coincidence. He said he's not angry and feels for the vandals.
Reginald Adams, one of the original muralists, is painting a new mural in its place. This one will show Obama wearing sunglasses and pointing directly at the viewer. It's a new mural, a new movement, and a new chance to move forward.
